Professor Ian Metcalfe

Ian Metcalfe, FREng, FIChemE, FRSC Professor of Chemical Engineering at Newcastle University was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2012. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, a Chartered Chemist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has published over 120 refereed papers including seminal papers on catalyst promotion, solid oxide fuel cells and ion-conducting membranes. His h-index is 32. He has supervised 43 PhD students and leads a research group at Newcastle comprising of 9 PhD students and 5 postdoctoral research fellows. He currently holds an ERC Advanced Grant in membrane engineering and five EPSRC grants. His relevant expertise is in the design, application and kinetic evaluation of high temperature ceramic membranes. Metcalfe was the PI on the Delivery of Sustainable Hydrogen SUPERGEN which involved a £6M budget and 14 research groups. He is a co-I on the HFC SUPERGEN and is a member of the UK Catalysis Hub. IM has acted as a PhD external examiner on over 35 separate occasions in six countries across a range of departments including materials, chemistry and chemical engineering. He was awarded the Imperial College Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1997 and has authored a text book on kinetics and reaction engineering which has sold more than 7500 copies worldwide.
