A randomised trial of surgery compared to endovascular therapy in the treatment of ruptured intracranial aneurysms.

ISAT is a multicentre prospective randomised clinical trial comparing neurosurgical clipping and endovascular coil treatment for patients with a ruptured cerebral aneurysm causing acute subarachnoid haemorrhage.


Brief inclusion / exclusion criteria









Inclusion:

  • ASAH (as indicated by CT scan or lumbar puncture and an intracranial aneurysm confirmed by computer tomographic or conventional angiography)
  • Patient randomised within 48 hours of ictus

  • Exclusion:

  • Pregnancy
  • Major renal, hepatic or pulmonary disease
  • Major cardiac disease or recent myocardial infarct (< 6 months)
  • Age less than 18 years
  • Moribund condition on admission
