EFALL

Randomised controlled trial to determine whether epidural fentanyl given during a lumbar laminectomy is effective at controlling post-operative pain compared to standard analgesia.

EFALL is a randomised trial assessing the effectiveness of epidural fentanyl to control post-operative pain when compared to the current standard analgesic techniques.


Brief inclusion / exclusion criteria

Inclusion:

  • Having a lumbar laminectomy for degenerative canal stenosis, without discectomy
  • 18 years or older
  • Able to give informed consent for this trial

  • Exclusion:

  • There is a dural tear and/or CSF leak
  • Vulnerable group or unable to consent
  • Contraindication to fentanyl eg:
    1. Respiratory depression
    2. Severe obstructibe airways disease
    3. Concurrent administration of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors
    4. Known intolerance to fentanyl
