As part of this pilot study we have been seeking parents’ views, in particular regarding their reasons for either agreeing or declining to be part of the SamExo trial and also about their perceptions of the information they received about it. The aim of this exercise is to find ways of improving the way future studies are run by taking account of parents’ perceptions and ideas. It is likely that this will help not only intermittent exotropia research but also studies of surgical treatment in children’s eye conditions generally. A total of 48 parents kindly agreed to be interviewed about their willingness or not to take part in the SamExo study, of whom 34 had declined and 14had agreed to take part in the SamExo trial itself. Most of those interviewed were mothers but a few (eight) were fathers of children with intermittent exotropia. These parents have also been giving us their views on the study information they had received, and suggestions for improving future randomised trials of childhood squint.
