Stephen Kay

Stephen is the Archaeology Officer at the British School at Rome, a Visiting Researcher within the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University and a Visiting Academic in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton.

He graduated from Archaeology at the University of Durham and later undertook an MSc in Archaeological Computing at the University of Southampton.

Stephen has been a practicing geophysicist since the late 1990s when he began surveying as part of an extensive project studying Roman towns in central Italy. Since 2004 he has worked for the BSR and University of Southampton on geophysical surveys throughout Italy, the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa. He has published widely on geophysical prospection and classical archaeology, with a principal focus on geophysics applied to Roman urbanism in central Italy. In 2012 he was appointed a Fellow at the BSR and co-directed excavations at Segni and Pompeii. In 2015 became the Archaeological Officer where he now leads the archaeological fieldwork programme.

The team at the BSR provides geophysical and topographical survey support for colleagues from around the world for research in Italy and around the Mediterranean.
