Professor Paolo Liverani

Professor Paolo Liveranihas served as curator of the Classical Antiquities of the Vatican Museum (1986-2005) with responsibility on the archaeological excavations in the Lateran extraterritorial area. Later, as professor for Ancient Topography at the University of Florence, he maintained his interest for the Caelian Hill and co-directed with Ian Haynes the Lateran Project and the SGL2 research programme at the Hospital of San Giovanni Addolorata in Rome. Finally he collaborated to prepare the ERC project Rome Transformed and is now member of the team.  His main interests are ancient topography of Rome, Latium and Etruria; Roman official art; polychromy of ancient Roman sculpture; history of the archaeological collections and museums of Rome. Paolo is member of several academies and archaeological institutions (Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia, Academia Europaea; corresponding member of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, the Société National des Antiquaires de France, the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Etruschi, the Archaeological Institute of America, honorary fellow of the British School at Rome).

He served as president of the International Association for Classical Archaeology (2003-2006) and is member of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology (Vatican City), of the Scientific committee of the Museo Nazionale Romano, Rome. scientific advisor of the Vatican Museum, President of the Consulta universitaria di Topografia Antica (Association of the academic Researchers for Ancient Topography); coordinator of the PhD Programme for Science of Antiquity and Archaeology (University of Pisa-Florence and Siena).
