Chondrocyte senescence in OA
Linking senescence with epigenomics to develop novel osteoarthritis interventions. Lead: Abby Brumwell; funded by MoSMed CDT and Nuchido
Age-associated diseases of the skeleton, including osteoarthritis, are painful and degenerative. The only available treatment for osteoarthritis is joint replacement surgery. Cells within the osteoarthritic joint become senescent, meaning they no longer grow as they should, and can damage healthy cells around them. We will work with Nuchido, a local pharmaceutical company, to test new molecules against senescent cells in bone and cartilage samples from patients. We will use and improve upon the latest screening technology to investigate the proteins in these cells and measure the impact that the molecules have. This work will identify potential future medicines for osteoarthritis.
