Rāg samay cakra

Here you will find a recorded anthology of fourteen North Indian rāg performances featuring khayāl vocalist Dr Vijay Rajput – a disciple of the late great Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. In sections 1-3 of David Clarke's book, Rāgs Around the Clock (which can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.11647/OBP.0313), you can explore commentaries on these rāgs, notations of the album's songs, and a wealth of related materials on Hindustani classical music and the khayāl style.

The album's title, Rāg samay cakra, points to the concept behind Rāgs Around Clock. Successive tracks take the listener through a cycle (cakra) of popular North Indian rāgs in order of their allotted times (samay) of the day or night; we have also included a pair of seasonal rāgs. Through this journey you can explore the many moods and colours of rāg.

The album has two sections, which you can explore by clicking on the sidebar links (or via the menu on the mobile phone version of this website). In the first, you can listen to the performances themselves. In the second, you can hear Vijay ji speak the texts of the songs on from each of the fourteen rāg renditions. This is to help non-Hindi or Urdu speakers achieve correct pronunciation if they want to learn the songs.
