Rāgs Around the Clock

A Handbook for North Indian Classical Music, with Online Online Recordings in the Khayāl Style. By David Clarke. Music by Vijay Rajput.

Rāgs Around the Clock is a compendium published by Open Book Publishers for the study and exploration of Hindustani (North Indian) classical music. It comprises an Open Access book of the same name, by David Clarke, and two online albums by khayāl singer Vijay Rajput, around which the contents of the book are based. The albums are entitled Rāg samay cakra (which means, roughly, ‘A cycle of rāgs’) and Twilight Rāgs from North India. Both reflect the idea – still very much alive within the Hindustani tradition – that a rāg should be performed at its proper time (samay). We hope the contents of this collection will appeal to anyone drawn to Indian classical music – whether inside or outside the academy; whether newcomer, aficionado (rasika), student, teacher, researcher, or lay listener.

The present website is an alternative source from which you can access the audio material of the Rāgs Around the Clock. Use the main menu to access the two albums and the book's many audio examples.
