Application Process: Step 2

An Overview of the Teaching & Scholarship Promotion Application Process

Step 2 - Consider whether you meet the job criteria set out in the role description for the position to which you are applying. It is highly recommended at this stage that you speak with your Head of Academic Unit - normally the Head of School - in order to discuss your plans to apply for promotion. The Head of Academic Unit will be able to offer constructive advice on whether the proposed application meets the job criteria and whether the supporting evidence is suitable. This is an important step in the process as the Head of Academic Unit is required to submit a confidential assessment of the applicant’s application as part of the promotion procedure.

In addition, the University organises a number of academic promotion workshops each year which provide an overview of the application process and also offer guidance and support to staff. These are organised by Faculty. The University informs staff about the dates and location of the workshops at the beginning of each academic year both via e-mail and through the Academic Promotions website.

The University also maintains a useful and informative web page that includes a number of individual case studies of T&S staff who have been promoted on the basis of excellent or exceptional teaching, administration and management, and engagement. The case studies include promotion from Lecturer F to G, Lecturer G to Senior Lecturer, to Reader, and to Personal Chair (Professor).
