The Promotion Process for Teaching & Scholarship Staff

At first glance the application process for promotion can seem a confusing and complicated task. The information below aims to provide a straightforward explanation of how the process works, how the University defines scholarship in the context of Teaching & Scholarship contracts, and to offer guidance on how applicants can build a case for promotion and evidence their achievements.

The specific deadline dates for the submission of promotion application materials vary from year to year, though deadlines generally tend to fall at the same time each year, as follows:

  • Mid-September - academic promotions exercise opens; Heads of Academic Units and Human Resources notify all academic staff via e-mail
  • Early October - closing date for submission of applications for Chair and Reader to Heads of Academic Units
  • Early November - closing date for submission of applications for Lecturer and Senior Lecturer
  • Late November - Faculty Promotions Committees meet to discuss applications for Chairs and Readers
  • Early February - initial outcomes for Chair and Reader applications communicated to applicants and Heads of Academic Units
  • Early March - Faculty Promotions Committees meet to discussion applications for Lecturer and Senior Lecturer
  • Late April - outcomes for Lecturer and Senior Lecturer applications communicated to applicants and Heads of Academic Units
  • Late May - outcomes of Chair and Reader applications communicated to applicants and Heads of Academic Units
  • 1 August - All approved promotions take effect from this date
