About Us

Mrs Sarah Graham

Sarah Graham is Deputy Director of the Combined Honours Centre at Newcastle University and is its Director of Excellence in Learning and Teaching. Externally, she holds Senior Fellowship of Advance HE (formally the Higher Education Academy) and is also an Advance HE Accreditor, working with the UK Professional Standards Framework for Higher Education (UKPSF). Sarah’s scholarship interests include researching and evaluating how students learn in HE and in turn how best we (academics/educators) can support their learning. Learning as a social construct underpins Sarah’s thinking and practice both inside the classroom and beyond, where she is inspired and motivated by the works of Mezirow, Wenger, Erikson and Ziehe.

Dr Simon Tate

Simon is Director of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (DELT) and a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology. In 2018 he was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Education Excellence Award in recognition of his impact upon the experience of students at Newcastle University. Simon is also a Faculty Programme Liaison Officer (FPLO) and Professional Standards Adviser (PSA) for University staff enrolled on the Certificate in Advanced Studies in Academic Practice (CASAP) or pursuing professional accreditation with the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE) through the professional dialogue route. Nationally he is recognised as a member of Royal Geographical Society’s Accreditation Panel for Undergraduate Degree Programmes. Simon’s research interests span two (completely unrelated) things. Firstly, as a former school teacher, he is very interested in the social and academic transition from school to university - particularly how these are experienced by widening participation students. Most recently, Simon has been corresponding member of ALCAB (a body established by the government to lead the reform of A-levels). He is also an advisor to several A-level exam boards on this issue. In terms of outputs, Simon has written multiple transitions related research articles, a textbook, and a report on transitions for the Higher Education Academy. Simon’s second area of interest lies in political geography – particularly British foreign policy and the so-called “Special Relationship” between the UK and the USA. In 2012 his single authored monograph “A Special Relationship? British Foreign Policy in the Era of American Hegemony” was published by Manchester University Press.
