Transgenerational effects of parental occupational radiation exposure
This is a major research programme
which involved the construction of a unique database of all 300,000 births in
Cumbria, North of England linked to health data (cancer and deaths) and paternal occupational radiation
exposures (at Sellafield). All births are geographically referenced using
postcodes and grid-references.
The database has been used to investigate the role of parental radiation
exposure, proximity to hazardous locations and other factors on the health of
children in Cumbria. Health outcome data was obtained from various sources
(National Health Service Central Register, Northern Region Fetal Abnormalities
Survey, several Cancer Registries and by direct abstraction of family
practitioner records).
