SLLS Conference - Nathalie T.Martinez
This session presented the work of different groups: the University of Potsdam, Germany, UCL Institute of Education, UK, the University of Minnesota, USA and the University of British Columbia, Canada. The principal topic was the educational expectation of the parents and grandparents and the educational expectation, or attainment of the child. This topic is of interested to SEED as education is one of the important childhood outcomes.
It was not surprising to find a positive association between the expectations of the (grand)parents and the child’s own academic expectation or attainment. Yet, the valuable thoughts regarding the topic was thinking about the mechanisms by which the expectation in the older generations influence the child. For example genetic factors, or IQ. Which highlights the importance of combining different sources of data to answer this questions.
This thoughts will be taken into account for my next questions and analysis. A particular one to combine education with an external measurement and biological data is: how the education of the grandparents and parents influence the child’s academic attainment, the IQ and the genetic score of academic attainment.
