About NNUTS
NNUTS is a framework that supports effective and sustainable partnership working between speech and language therapy services and educational settings.
Normalising the implementation of universal, targeted and specialist models of service delivery is key to achieving positive outcomes for children with SLCN.
This helps to:
- Maximise the delivery of Speech and Language Therapy services' standard core offer to educational settings
- Minimise duplication of services and effort of speech and language therapists (SLTs) and educational settings
- Enhance the public health role of SLTs with children
Behaviour change theory and models are used to ensure that the sustainable implementation of interventions for children with SLCN can be normalised into the educational settings' curriculum.
NNUTS can be delivered within current secondary and tertiary models of health service delivery because of the large number of unidentified and unreferred children who have SLCN. These children will suffer long term adverse consequences without additional support. Evidence indicates that over 60% of children with SLCN are not referred for specialist help (Law, J., Todd, L., Clark, J., Mroz, M., & Carr, J. (2013). Early Language Delays in the UK.).
