Shirley Jordan

Shirley Jordan is Professor of French Studies, whose current research contributes to the field of cultural gerontology. Shirley focuses on ageing, ageism and care as explored in a range of narratives, visual representations, and theory, both in French culture and in comparative perspective. A Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2022-23) has allowed Shirley to examine representations of ageing and of care for older people made over several decades by Magnum photographer Martine Franck.

Shirley is Co-Lead of the NUCoRE (Newcastle University Centre of Research Excellence) on Ageing and Inequalities and Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Women’s Writing at London University’s School of Advanced Studies and has organised events focusing on women’s ageing and women’s practices and theories of care.

Shirley welcomes expressions of interest from potential PhD candidates.
