Rachel Woodward

I am a Professor of Human Geography in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology here at Newcastle University.

I research and teach on two broad areas.  The first is military geographies, so issues like the politics of military land use, military environmentalism, military landscapes and the politics of military heritage sites.  The second is more sociological, and research in this area has included work on gender and military forces, women’s military participation, military masculinities, military identities, military memoirs, the university armed service units like OTC, UAS and URNU, and the Reserves.  My publications include Bringing War to Book: Writing and Producing the Military Memoir (with K. Neil Jenkings, 2018, Palgrave), the Palgrave International Handbook on Gender and the Military (edited with Claire Duncanson, 2017, Palgrave), and the Routledge Research Companion to Military Research Methods (edited with Alison J. Williams, Matthew R. Rech and K. Neil Jenkings, 2016, Routledge). I am a co-editor of Journal of War and Culture Studies, an associate editor of Critical Military Studies, and a member of the editorial boards of European Journal of International Security and Geopolitics.
