Martin Farr

Martin Farr’s teaching, supervision, and research covers all aspects of politics and public life in Britain since the First World War.

He took his PhD at Glasgow under Professor Hew Strachan, writing about British finance and strategy in the First World War, leading to several publications on the politics of the war including a monograph and an article in War in History. He is currently co-editing a volume entitled Presidents and Premiers: From Cleveland and Salisbury to Trump and May, 1895-2019 and is writing the chapters about Barack Obama and David Cameron, and Donald Trump and Theresa May. He is also co-editing another book in which he is contributing a chapter on military and imperial tropes in 1960s Britain. He is supervising PhDs on First World War trench art, international perspectives on the Falklands conflict, and on the German bombing of Britain after the Blitz. He is co-chair of Insights Public Lectures, which includes the annual Defence Lecture, given in 2018 by Lord Hutton, and before him by speakers including Sir Antony Beevor, Lord Dannatt, and Professor Sir Hew Strachan.
