Craig Jones

I am a Lecturer in Political Geography at Newcastle University. I am interested in the different ways that war is fought, understood, and resisted, and my work focuses especially on wars in the Middle East.

I am currently working on two research projects. The first examines the relationship between war and the legal regimes that govern it. I am writing a monograph (under contract with Oxford University Press) about the growing involvement of military lawyers in US and Israeli lethal targeting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Gaza. The second project examines access to treatment for the sick and injured in a region where medical and healthcare infrastructures have been destroyed (often deliberately) by military and paramilitary violence. It focuses on the war in Syria (2011-present), the war in Iraq (2003-present), and the war in Gaza (2006-present), and traces the systems of casualty evacuation and medical care that have emerged across the borders in Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. I am always looking for collaborators and people to work with: victims of (para)military violence, academics, students, journalists, activists and interested citizens are encouraged to get in touch.
