Camillia Cowling is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Warwick. She is the author of Conceiving Freedom: Women of Colour, Gender and the Abolition of Slavery in Havana and Rio de Janeiro (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2013). Her current research is entitled Across the Miles: Slavery, Mobility and the Law in Nineteenth-Century Slave Societies and examines how human movement underpinned slave societies in legal, social and political terms.
