Work descriptionI completed my PhD at the Uppsala University, Sweden in 2002, working on cell cycle regulation in the archaeal organism Sulfolobus. My main project was to determine the regulation and the timing of the cell cycle periods. For my first post doc (2003- 2006) at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences I went from the archaeal field into working with bacteria and their beneficial properties (plant growth promoting and antifungal) for the environment. During my second post doc I will cover the last domain of life, Eukaryotes. My focus will be on the human parasite Entamoeba histolytica and its mitosome, a remnant mitochondrion. E. histolytica is the causative agent of amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscesses. The main objective is to determine the function of the mitosome by finding and localizing mitosomal proteins. Karin has now moved back to Sweden to work in the School of life sciences of Soedertoern University, her new contact details are: Dr Karin Hjort School of Life Sciences Soedertoern University SE-141 89 Huddinge Sweden Karin's publications
