Work description

Cellular localization of T. hominis mitochondrial Hsp70 (green fluorescence) within mitosomes of two microsporidia living inside a rabbit kidney cell, detected using an antibody raised to the T. hominis protein. The confocal microscopy is taken from Williams et al, 2002
As an undergraduate I have studied Biology at University of Crete, Greece. There, I had the opportunity to have my final year project on “studying mtDNA recombination in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis”. On completion of my undergraduate studies I started working at Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics as a Research Technician where I was involved in different projects in the field of Human Genetics. In parallel, I was also working on a project in collaboration with different laboratories, in an attempt to discover possible recombination in mtDNA from sequences already published.

Currently, I have a PhD Scholarship from the School of Biology of University of Newcastle. The aim of my PhD is to address fundamental questions concerning the function of the microsporidian mitosome - the smallest ‘mitochondrion’ yet found, and the role of HGT in the evolution of microsporidia and eukaryotes. My project will combine theoretical, computational and wet-lab science to address these questions.

Tasos is currently working as a Marie Curie Fellow at Dalhouse University in Canada, his new contact details are:
