Dr Cristina McKean is a speech and language therapist, senior lecturer and researcher based at Newcastle University. Her research is driven and informed by her many years as a practitioner.

Language development underpins the ability of children to build and maintain social relationships, develop narratives which define their sense of identity, self-regulate their behavior and read and write. It is the medium through which all other learning occurs.

The development of robust language development in the early years is vital for successful transition into school and the role of early years classrooms in promoting robust language development through the provision of language rich environments cannot be over-stated.

In this workshop we will:

1.  Define and describe the 5 characteristics of ‘language rich’ early years classrooms

2.  Share experiences of best practice in providing language rich experiences

3.  Consider how to make it work for every child: stimulating language in groups

4.  Consider how to develop and implement a language enrichment strategy: enabling the provision of a language rich environment every day.
