Site visit to Lynemouth and Dawdon

Adam has been on a reconniassance trip to Lynemouth, on the Northumberland Coast, and Dawdon, on the Durham coast, to assess their suitability for inclusion in a characterisation study of legacy wastes. At Lynemouth Bay, landfill waste co-deposited with colliery spoil from both Lynemouth and Ellington Collieries is now undergoing tidal erosion, revealing historic waste previously buried within the cliffs. At Dawdon, colliery waste from four coal mines was deposited directly on a 12 km stretch of beach. The picture (right) shows a highly ferruginous (iron-rich) body of water against the cliff at Dawdon.
