37th General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission (ESC 2021)

Learning from Earthquakes project presented the application of sentiment analysis in two case studies at the 37th General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission (ESC 2021) Intensity-based sentiment analysis: The 2020 Aegean earthquake and the 2019 Albanian earthquake.

The case of the Aegean earthquake on Monday, Sep 20, 2021, was attended by 23 participants. Dr Gerasimos Chouliaras, Director at Institute of Geodynamics, National Observatory of Athens, Greece, reported a better understanding of the concept of sentiment analysis (SA). Afterwards, Dr Dragos Tataru, Senior Researcher in the Seismic Network Department of the National Institute for Earth Physics (INFP) in Romania, asked Dr Diana Contreras about plans for future research on this topic.

The presentation of the case of the 2019 Albania earthquake on Wednesday, Sep 22, 2021, was attended by 26 participants. There was one question about the translation of the tweets to identify the proper polarity, for which Dr Diana Contreras answered that the project has counted with the support of native speaker researchers. Another question was about how the polarity changes through the observation period. This change in the polarity through the observation period was plotted for the case of L'Aquila on the 10th anniversary of the earthquake, but not yet for the case of Albania.  The main object of this case study was to test the accuracy of the algorithm developed by MonkeyLearn for the unsupervised classification of tweets related to emergency response and early recovery.
