James O’Hara

James O’Hara is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University and Honorary Consultant Otolaryngologist – Head and Neck surgeon for Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is chief investigator for the Trial of Alginates in Throat Symptoms (TALGITS) and a leading member of the team who delivered the Trial of Proton Pump Inhibitors in Throat Symptoms (TOPPITS). He has worked on three other large clinical randomised trials assessing the effectiveness of tonsillectomy in adults, nasal septal surgery, and laser therapy for radiation induced oral mucositis. He supervises and advises post-graduate students from a wide field of specialties.

His clinical interests include: transoral robotic surgery, transoral laser microsurgery, pharyngeal pouch surgery, outpatient laryngeal interventions and salivary gland diseases.

He is the honorary treasurer for both the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists and the Laryngology and Rhinology section of the Royal Society of Medicine. He is the ENT surgical specialty lead for research within the Royal College of Surgeons of London.
