Documentation project of Saraguro Kichwa

Welcome! This website concentrates on the documentation of Saraguro Kichwa, a native language of Ecuador that is spoken in the province of Loja.

Kichwa Language

This language belongs to the Quechua linguistic family; languages in this family are spoken in the Andes from southern Colombia to northern Argentina. Saraguro Kichwa is severely endangered.

When this start?

This project started in 2023 with the documentation of stories from the Saraguro community.

Who is behind?

The initiative is undertaken by Gabriel Martínez Vera, a lecturer at Newcastle University in the UK.

Main Goal

The ultimate goal of this project is to promote the language’s revitalization.

First Steps

To this end, as first step, we are documenting the community’s history through its speakers, the living repositories of the language.
