Dr Edgar Segovia

Dr Edgar Segovia joined the School of Engineering at Newcastle University in 2025 as a Research Associate, contributing to the Horizon Europe project WILSON. His research focuses on digital twinning for the built environment, with particular emphasis on human factors, thermal comfort, and energy performance at building and district levels. His work aims to enhance user-centred approaches to facility management through the
integration of demand forecasting, energy modelling, and distributed data systems.
Before joining Newcastle University, Dr Segovia held research roles at the Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre and Teesside University, where he developed smart energy solutions for SMEs and conducted predictive modelling for electricity demand to support renewable integration. His professional experience also includes technical leadership in hybrid energy systems, such as a 50 kW solar-wind microgrid for the CIRPSMicrogrid Academy and a 300 kW hydroelectric plant for Res4Africa, with responsibilities ranging from system design to procurement and commissioning.

Dr Segovia holds a PhD and an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Teesside University. He also completed both BEng and MEng degrees in Electrical Engineering at Sapienza Università di Roma, and holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Universidad Central de Venezuela. This interdisciplinary training supports his work across a range of topics, including building energy modelling, infrastructure performance analysis, and the deployment of decentralised systems.

In recognition of his contributions to global engineering innovation, Dr Segovia received an award from the National Academy of Engineering for his participation in the Grand Challenge for Engineering. This programme engages young researchers worldwide in addressing pressing societal challenges.
