Andrea Sbaragli
- KTP Associate School of Engineering
Andrea Sbaragli is a KTP associate at the University of Newcastle, where the industrial and research challenge requires digitizing the operations of off-site construction processes. Together with the industry partner, Andrea leverages his background with Internet of Things sensors and machine learning algorithms, such as neural networks, to improve the performance of in-plant operations. This approach leads to operational cost reductions and a fairer workload for employees.
Andrea obtained his Europaeus PhD in Materials, Mechatronics, and Systems Engineering cum laude (with honours) in 2025 at the University of Trento, Italy. With a thesis titled Cyber-physical systems (CPS) to monitor the efficiency and sustainability of human-centric manufacturing systems, he demonstrates the importance for plant managers of adopting human-centric digital solutions to monitor mass customized production processes with key performing and risk indicators. During the spring semester in 2023, Andrea was a visiting fellow at the University of Twente where together with the manufacturing systems research group developed a CPS to monitor the operations of human-centric reconfigurable manufacturing environments.
The main area of interest in Andrea's background is the development of digital solutions powered by machine learning algorithms (e.g., human digital twins) to achieve efficient and most importantly socially sustainable value creations in human-centric manufacturing operations.
