Outstanding Publication from team

Our new paper, 'Decarbonising construction equipment: Management practices and strategies for net zero in UK infrastructure projects', published in Elsevier's Building and Environment Journal, has just come out.

In the paper, we analyse emission reduction strategies (alternative fuels, electrification, and hydrogen-powered systems) and digital (telematics systems, machine control, data aggregation platforms) to decarbonise construction equipment adopted across the UK supply chain. We also analyse the challenges in progressing each of the decarbonisation strategies/innovations, and propose various recommendations (i.e. overcoming supply chain fragmentation, policies and financial incentives for alternative fuels, advanced data integration systems, training and behavioural incentives) to progress decarbonisation in this domain.

This outstanding work, led by Wahib Saif (PhD researcher and lead author), draws on insights from in-depth interviews with close industry collaborators and their networks. It is a partnership that I had the pleasure of establishing during my time at Northumbria University, bringing together Costain Group PLC, Okana and IC3: International Centre for Connected Construction, who collectively co-fund the PhD research.
