To overcome the traditional tether issues underwater (looping and tangling) that effect the ROV motion and operation, the proposed smart tether technology will enable lower costs within the industry, provide smart motion of the ROV, and reduce timescales of decommissioning in particular by enhancing knowledge of for example contaminated waste storage ponds, promote the use of remote inspection and thus reduce human exposure to radiation and improve safety. 

Currently, the project is in the development and testing stages.
