Spring School: Interiors
- Venue: Newcastle University
- Start: Wed, 20 May 2015 09:00:00 BST
- End: Sat, 23 May 2015 18:30:00 BST
The Gender Research Group and the Medieval & Early Modern Studies Research Group at Newcastle University are jointly offering an interdisciplinary and cross-period Spring School on the topic of ‘Interiors’. This School runs from the 20th to the 23rd of May 2015.
This Spring School will consider three key instances of the cultural construction of interiors through the analysis of the material book, the human body and built space. A day is devoted to each of these motifs, in addition to an introductory day.
We are delighted to announce that the Spring School's keynote will be given by Professor Raewyn Connell (Sydney), who is also teaching on the School. Her talk is entitled 'Border Protection: Inside and Outside Defended Spaces of the Neoliberal World Order'. This free public lecture is the first to take place under the auspices of the newly-established Newcastle University Humanities Research Institute.
The School is interdisciplinary and cross-period in focus: we are inviting students to think outside disciplinary and chronological confines. It is aimed at high-performing, and intellectually adventurous B.A. and M.A. students who are considering further postgraduate study in a range of fields including (but not limited to) literature, history, cultural and media studies, geography, and sociology. It is ideal for students interested in both theoretical and cross-period approaches to their research interests.
The School is strictly limited to 20 students. Each day there will be a number of seminars, in addition to reading groups, panel discussions, and visits to local archives. Lunch and refreshments are provided each day, and there are several social events planned in the evening, including a final evening wine reception and buffet dinner.
Students will be provided with reading material in advance and are expected to contribute to all seminar discussions.
