Application process

When applying to the CDT, applicants are required to submit an application to their desired host institution (i.e. the University they wish to study at) of either Newcastle University or the University of Nottingham. This can be done using the application links below.

  • Step 1 – applicants should submit an application to their desired host institution.
  • Step 2 – applications will be reviewed by the CDT Programme Team after the closing date and applicants will be informed if they have been invited to interview stage. Please note: we will keep you up-to-date with your application progress via email.
  • Step 3 – applicants that make stage two of the recruitment process will be invited attend an interview with the CDT Programme Team.
  • Step 4 – interview decisions will be communicated to applicants.

Please note: applications are for 1+3 PhD and in year one candidates will study on an MRes in Geospatial Data Science. Therefore, applications at both Newcastle and Nottingham will initially be to the MRes programme.

How to apply

Students are invited to submit an application outlining their own research proposal, interests and experience and how these relate to the CDT. However, the CDT do have examples of research projects that are available in the CDT. Please see our PhD Projects Page for project outlines.

When completing an application, please quote the relevant studentship code in the studentship/partnership reference box. To submit your own proposal, use GEO22_00. If you are applying for a specific project, please use the reference on that project brief.

  • Applying to Newcastle: in the postgraduate application system, ‘Create an account’. Enter 4881F as the programme code in the programme of study tab, select ‘MRes Geospatial Data Science’ as the programme of study, and enter the related studentship code in the studentship / partnership reference box, e.g. GEO22_00 (see PhD Projects Page for studentship codes). The relevant studentship code should also be quoted in your covering letter. If you are applying for an EPSRC and industry studentship, you will need to include both relevant codes (e.g. GEO22_00, and GEO22_01) in your covering letter.
  • Applying to Nottingham: in the MyNottingham portal, select ‘Apply for a new course’, select programme 'MRes Geospatial Data Science' and follow instructions on Nottingham’s Postgraduate Study page quoting the reference ‘U3019’. Please also quote this reference in your covering letter. In addition, you must ensure that you name, Stuart Marsh, when asked to name a supervisor on your application. If you are applying for a specific Phd Project, plus include both codes in your supporting documents (e.g. U3019, and GEO22_05).

Important Documents: as part of an application at Newcastle or Nottingham, you are required to attach:

  • A covering letter which includes a 500 word statement on why you are interested in applying to study geospatial data science, and how your interests and experience relate to the CDT.
  • A CV
  • A 300 word project brief if you are applying with your own research topic

Please note, the following documents may not be required to submit an application but if you are successful, you will be required to provide:
