FLOWAVE Project
The website presents a tool to generate estimates of the costs, benefits and net incremental benefit for an implementation of a Community Water Fluoridation scheme for an area of interest. You can set the population size your extended scheme would cover and the prevalence (percentage of people) with experiences of caries decay (has a filled, crowned, extracted or decayed tooth) in your scheme area.
This tool draws on the results of the FLOWAVE project which examined the value and cost-effectiveness of community water fluoridation (CWF) as a public health measure to prevent tooth decay. Despite strong evidence supporting its efficacy, only a small fraction of the global population benefits from such schemes. The research employs health economics approaches to assess the short and long-term costs and benefits of CWF, utilizing economic-based valuation techniques and decision modelling. Quantitatively incorporating both pro- and anti-fluoride views, it provides valuable insights for policymakers to understand the efficiency of CWF initiatives and make informed decisions regarding public health investments.
