Professor Luke Vale MA Hons MSc PhD. Luke is an expert in economic evaluation and health technology assessment. He has over 19 years of health economics experience. He currently holds the Health Foundation Chair in Health Economics at Newcastle University where he leads the Health Economics Group. He is also the Director of the NIHR Research Design Service for the North East and Deputy Director of the Institute of Health & Society at Newcastle University. Prior to joining Newcastle University in February 2011 he held a joint post as Professor of Health Technology Assessment in the Health Economics and Health Services Research Units both at the University of Aberdeen. One of his research interests is in the development and application of methods economic evaluation and the use of modelling methods in economic evaluation and since 2010 he has been Chairman of the joint economic methods group of the international Cochrane and Campbell Collaborations. He has established extensive links with policy makers and researchers throughout the UK and internationally involved in priority setting in health and public policy. Since 2000, he has secured over 40 major grants from prestigious funders, including fourteen as Principal Investigator. In addition, he has a strong publication record with over 140 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 4 books, 15 book chapters and over 80 other significant reports. Luke’s role within the FiCTION trial is to lead the health economics component of the study; in this role he replaces Dr Mark Deverill.
