Professor Nigel Pitts BDS PhD FDS RCS(Eng) FDS RCS(Ed) FFGDP(UK) FFPH FRSE. Nigel was Director of the Dental Health Services Research Unit in Dundee since December 1985. Currently, he is also Professor of Dental Health, an Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health, NHS Tayside and Lead for the Centre for Primary Care and Population Research in the Medical School. In parallel, he was Dean of the Dental School (1997-2000), before setting up and Directing the Centre for Clinical Innovations at Dundee (2001-2012). Nigel graduated in Dentistry from the University of London then, following appointments in London, moved to the University of Hong Kong to help set-up a new Dental School and undertook an external University of London PhD. He has published 180 peer-reviewed papers, attracted over £16 million in peer-reviewed grant funding and holds Fellowships from: Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh, Faculty of Public Health and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He has been awarded research prizes from: the Federation Dentaire Internationale, the British Dental Association Research Foundation, the International Association for Dental Research and the European Organisation for Caries Research (President from 2007-2009). He is Co-Chair of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System Foundation. Nigel is a member Council for the Scottish Inter-Collegiate Guidelines Development Group (SIGN), has Chaired Guideline Development Groups for both SIGN (Caries in 6-16 year olds) and NICE (dental recall), is a member of the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme Steering Committee and Chairs the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Guidance Development Group on Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment. He is also a member of the External Advisory Board for the National Institutes for Health funded US Practice Based Research Network “PEARL”. He has published extensively on caries epidemiology, detection, assessment, diagnosis and management in children. Specifically, he has also highlighted the range of clinical options now available for caries care and the lack of primary care-based evidence to support or refute their use. Nigel took up a new appointment at King’s college in January 2013. Nigel brings his internationally acknowledged expertise in cariology to the design and execution of this trial.
