  • How can better planning and urban regeneration interventions combat the student housing crisis in Newcastle-upon-Tyne
  • Master of Planning

This creative and enriching research project is a study into how urban planning and regeneration can assist with the ongoing student housing crisis in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Throughout the past two years, many students have struggled with finding suitable accommodation, with a whopping 45% of the student body feeling like they are not in appropriate housing. This project firstly investigates the financial, locational and safety issues that student renters face with housing and highlights the idea that housing challenges can have a detrimental impact on a student’s wellbeing and quality of university life. Through this project, we want to bring positive change to student housing issues through data collection. Methodology including surveys and interviews is carried out with a range of stakeholders e.g., students, council member, a lecturer within the department in order for a varied study. This study concludes with planning implementations suggested for improvement for housing in Newcastle.
