- Buried antiques: examining the reuse of objects and landscape features in Anglo-Saxon conversion period burials
My project has explored the presence and significance of ‘antique’ objects found in Anglo-Saxon period burial contexts in Northumbria. The project has focused on burials dated to the period of conversion to Christianity and aimed to establish a link between the presence of re-used objects and the location of Anglo-Saxon burials near Roman and prehistoric landscape features. The project also aimed to record any patterns or common themes in the practice of the reuse of material culture, in terms of the style and material of objects, and chronology of the re-used materials. The project has also attempted to highlight the role women played in religious conversion.
