  • The effect of quality of sleep and mood on emotional processing and emotional memory in bipolar disorder and healthy controls

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mental disorder characterised by episodes of moods ranging from depression to mania, interrupted by periods of normal mood. Cognitive deficits are indicated in BD and these include the recognition of facial expressions and emotional memory. Given the prevalence of sleep disorders in BD, this study aimed to investigate the effect quality of sleep and mood state has on emotional processing in BD patients and healthy controls. Knowing the influence sleep and mood have on emotional processing could lead to a new area of intervention to improve social lives, and therefore possibly mood states for bipolar patients.
