  • Finding a “fingerprint” of wholegrain food intake in plasma

The aim was to determine wholegrain intake of 60 year old participants from the 1000 family study using Alkylresorcinols (AR) which are phenolic lipids found in the bran of wholegrain wheat and rye and as an indicator of wholegrain intake. Another aim was to compare the AR concentration to participants’ blood pressure (BP), fasting blood glucose (BG) as well as cholesterol levels in order to investigate the effect of wholegrain consumption in reducing the risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes as well as high cholesterol. As such, plasma samples from all 118 participants involved in the study should have been analysed for their AR content using the Gas chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS).
