  • Commemorative Artefacts Portraying 18th-19th Century American Slave Ships

This research will, for the first time, make a sustained attempt to research artefacts such as punchbowls and jugs that commemorate voyages made by American slave ships in the 18th century.   I will use the Transatlantic Slave Trade Database (http://slavevoyages.org ) to determine whether the ships depicted on ceramics in key American museum collections were in fact slave ships.  I will then use the same online resource to build a detailed picture of the ships themselves, their voyages, captains and crews.  In this way, I will make a new contribution to the study of the material culture of the American slave trade.
