  • A Commemorative project: the Decade of Centenaries and The Irish Diaspora in Tyneside

The recent commemorations of the First World War and the Irish Revolution have reignited debates on the best way to commemorate these events. I will explore these debates, specifically in regards to the Irish diaspora in Tyneside. The Irish diaspora in Newcastle is an important group to examine as they made a contribution to the British war effort through the Tyneside Irish Regiment, but also there is evidence of a significant involvement in the Irish independence movement (1919-1921), highlighting a conflict of identity. The aim is to be inclusive by offering alternative memories of history by exploring methods of presenting history to the wider public.
