- Leper Hospitals of the medieval North East: A focus on St Leonard’s hospital of Tynemouth and other sites in the region.
The focus of my research was the medieval leper hospitals of the North East of England, specifically St Leonard’s leper hospital at Tynemouth. I examined this in relation to other hospitals of the North East to compare the similarities and differences between them and to assess the societal impact of leprosy in the region. This was completed by examining documentary evidence and unpublished excavation reports, photographing sites, liaisons with the county archaeologist and surveying the structural remains.
