  • Diagnosis of dementia by measuring proteins in blood

The research group has been developing a blood test to diagnose dementia. They identified a protein(alpha-synuclein) in red blood cells, which appears to be significantly decreased in people with dementia. The current research proposal aims to identify why this protein is decreased in subjects with memory problems. For this, the team will work on identifying the relationship between the inflammatory processes that are detected in the blood stream of older people and see whether they influence the loss of this protein. If this is the case, these findings can have a direct clinical implication for the prevention, and even treatment of dementia in older people.
