  • Women in India: The Other Half. A study of women’s organisations: from colonial to contemporary, the struggle continues.

This project studies the historical development of the Indian feminist movement from the earliest women’s organizations in India to contemporary ones. The ideology, obstacles to gender equality and context of the wider movement are examined to explain the continuity and change of women’s organisations in India. From the earliest days, social reform aimed at the uplift of women in India and women’s organizations have consequently focused on issues such as sexual violence against women. This project will explore the argument that women’s movements have been ‘NGOized’ in attempts to create new spaces for change and activism. Twenty days in Delhi permitted research at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, especially the archived manuscripts and interviews with contemporary women’s organisations.
