In the 1870s Marsden Lime Kilns in South Shields were constructed and opened in order to produce large amounts of quick lime for many different purposes, one of which was agriculture. The large kilns have been adapted and extended over the years in order to keep up with the demand for lime. The kilns stopped operating in the 1960s and have since stood as part of a historical monument to the North East's industrial heritage. This research project aims to establish the historical significance of the value of the Lime Kilns at Marsden.
