  • Beyond the Harem: Challenging perceptions of women in the medieval Islamic world

I am intending to research the role of women in medieval Islamic society, focusing on women at the royal court in the Golden Age period at the end of the ninth century, but also exploring the role of women in late dynasties, specifically the Mamluk and Fatimid. I want to challenge western perspectives of Islamic women and I hope to prove that, in reality, these women had power and status in their own right.
