  • Nitric oxide regulation of 5-HT neuronal firing in the dorsal raphe nucleus

The DRN is the major source of 5-HT inputs to the forebrain and dysfunction of this 5-HT system is implicated in various neuropsychiatric disorders including anxiety, depression and eating disorders. Whilst NO neurones have been shown to be present in the DRN, the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the regulation of 5-HT neuronal activity is unknown. This project will examine the role of NO in the regulation of the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) 5-HT system, and examine the underlying mechanisms. A clearer understanding of the physiology of this system may suggest new targets for pharmacotherapy of neuropsychiatric disorders.
