- Surface modified nanoparticles as vectors to deliver therapeutic agents through mucus layers
Surface modified nanoparticles as vectors to deliver therapeutic agents through mucus layers. The purpose of this project is identifying ways to transport specific nanocarriers through the mucus gel layer of the gastrointestinal tract. This will be done through new methods such as proteolytic enzyme attachment or through improvement of existing methods, to ensure efficient transport of the nanocarriers, while maintaining the function of the mucus layer, so that the epithelium remains protected. We are aiming to improve penetration of these nanocarriers through surface modification such as trans-well assays, thus creating a way for nanocarriers to effectively penetrate the mucus layer, without completely damaging it (damage caused will be monitored via rheological measurements)
