- Relationship of secretagogin and neurogenesis with increasing AD pathology
Neurogenesis the production of new neurons has been shown to be altered in the brains of demented patients, increasing Alzheimer type pathology has been shown to correlate with this decrease. The area most affected in the brain is the hippocampus which is involved in memory and also contains the neurogenic niche vital in the production of new cells. A set of neurons which appear to be spared pathological features have been identified using the marker secretagogin. Using markers for neurogenesis and secretagogin, we will investigate the neurogenic nature of these cells.
